Fat lamps are simple candles. The two pictured above are made by pouring animal fat into a quahog shell. Quahogs are thick-shelled clams. For wicks, the lamp on the left uses a small piece of cordage twisted out of milkweed. The right lamp uses a piece of mullein pith. Pictured with the lamps are (left to right) flint from Giverny, France, tinder fungus inonotus obliquus and pyrite. |
